What cannot be downloaded

Private videos, videos shared only with friends, posts inside closed or private groups, and anything on a private profile cannot be fetched from a link: reaching them takes a Facebook login that is allowed to see them, and this site never asks for yours. If you can already watch one, though, the private video downloader can save it from the page source your own browser has. A video posted as a comment often has no address of its own, so there is nothing to paste; Messenger chats, whole photo albums and entire pages in one go are outside what the tool does as well.

Which quality to choose: 1080p, 720p or SD

Facebook re-encodes every upload into several versions so its player can adapt to a viewer’s connection. The list shows only the versions that exist for that particular video, each with its approximate size, which is why two videos can offer different choices.

  • 1080p: for a large screen, or footage you plan to edit.
  • 720p: still sharp on a phone or a laptop, at roughly half the size.
  • SD: for slow connections or tight storage. A two-minute clip can be 90 MB at 1080p and under 15 MB in SD.

If a video only offers SD, the upload itself was low resolution, and no tool can add detail that was never there.

Download on iPhone, Android or PC

The downloader works in the browser you already have, so there is no app to install on any of them. What changes from one device to the next is where the file ends up.

iPhone and iPad

Safari saves downloads to the Files app, not to Photos. Open Files, go to Downloads, then tap Share and Save Video to put the clip in your camera roll.

Android

The file goes to your Downloads folder and shows up in the gallery shortly after. If nothing happens when you tap Download, the browser is usually waiting for permission to save files.

Windows PC, Mac and Linux

Any current browser saves the MP4 to its download folder, usually Downloads in your user folder, and it opens in the built-in player or imports straight into an editor.

Keep it one tap away

In Chrome on Android, open the menu and choose Add to Home screen; in Safari on iPhone, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. The page then opens in its own window, like an app, without installing anything.

Save just the audio as MP3

Interviews, live sets, lectures and podcast clips are often worth keeping as sound alone. Why a Facebook video won’t download

Four causes account for almost every failure, and three of them take under a minute to check.

  • The post is not public. Open the link in a private window while logged out. If it does not play there, it cannot be reached from here either.
  • The video is gone. Whoever posted it deleted it, or it disappeared along with their account.
  • The link is not a video link. A profile, a group or a search result is not enough; copy the link of the video itself.
  • The broadcast is still live. Wait for it to end and for the recording to be published, which usually takes a few minutes.

Region-locked videos play for some people and not for others, and there is no copy of them that can be fetched on your behalf.

Fast, and straight from Facebook

The downloader reads a video from Facebook’s own player data, the same information the site uses to play it for you. The file then reaches you directly from Facebook’s servers instead of being copied to ours first, so it downloads at your connection’s full speed and in exactly the quality it was uploaded. The first request for a video waits for that answer; after that it is answered from a short-lived cache, which is why a link that is doing the rounds resolves almost at once. When Facebook is slow, the request moves to a queue and the page shows your position instead of a spinner. The links you paste are never tied to you.
